During the process, you'll be able to decide if you want a copy of the messages to be maintained on the server. In this way, you will have a backup and you'll avoid the probability to lose an e-mail message if the forwarding is to an outside address, which is momentarily unavailable. This option can be activated and disabled at any time, and if you use e-mail for critical matters, it is better to use it, because no data of the emails will be maintained on the server if the option is not enabled. If you determine that you do not need forwarding anymore, it will take just a mouse click to disable it.
